An autumn packed with events

Our partners were busy with events for REEForest this fall. Find out what we have been up to!

One block at a time

A group of students aged 6 to 14 will participate in the FIRST LEGO League Challenge with a project on marine restoration!

The kids involved will imagine new supports and technologies for the transplantation of Cystoseira. We always welcome ideas for structures that allow the new algae to be planted and protected from predators.

Updates on our team will soon follow!

Earthshot nomination for HCMR

Our partner in Greece HCMR has been nominated for the Earthshot Prize! The most prestigious competition for environmental protection rewards the best solutions that meet the 5 objectives or ‘Earthshots’: Protect and Restore Nature, Clean our Air, Revive our Oceans, Build a Waste-Free World and Fix our Climate.

The HCMR Institute of Oceanography was nominated for the competition by EPLO‘s Institute for Sustainable Development, due to the ecosystem restoration efforts of the Marine Biology and Ecology Division. One example is the dedicated work for Cystoseira, which is proceeding at full speed in the waters of Gyaros Island.

REEForest at ECOMONDO

Our partner ISPRA brought the REEForest project to the 2024 edition of the business fair ECOMONDO!

It’s the biggest Italian event dedicated to green and circular economy where entreprises, stakeholders, policy makers and opinion leaders meet and discuss new solutions.

Raising awareness on Cystoseira  is key during these events! The more people know about marine restoration, the more they can help us by reducing their impact and supporting our project!

Meeting our researchers in Bergeggi

This fall, the MPA Isola di Bergeggi opened its doors to students from different grades. Two lectures took place, one for students from Grazia Deledda high school and one for University students graduating in Environmental Engineering.

Our team talked about marine restoration and marine protected area regulations. The different phases of our project were described to students, both to create more conscious citizens and to inspire them. Who knows, maybe the same kids will become colleagues ina few years!

We will keep up with student events next year as well, bringing Cystoseira into more classrooms!

Cilento animates with events!

Among the events organised within the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, two involved our project. In Santa Maria di Castellabate, the park’s marine protected area, ‘Sapori del Parco’, an event dedicated to the region’s gastronomic specialities, was held at the end of October. The park’s stand hosted our materials and took the opportunity to tell the numerous visitors about marine restoration.

A special lesson on Cystoseira restoration was also held in Santa Maria di Castellabate for a few primary school classes.

Last but not least, we were also invited to the Mediterranean Exchange of Archaeological Tourism in Paestum where we distributed our materials and spoke about the importance of restoration for marine ecosystems.
