The future legacy of Gyaros Island is about to begin

The researchers from the Greek Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR) are about to start the outplanting activities on Gyaros Island!

After months of anticipation, the seedlings of Cystoseira are ready to be transferred to Gyaros’ shallow reef with the collaboration of the Central Aegen Management Unit of the Organization for the Protection of the Environment (NECCA).

The ceramic disks that host the young individuals of Cystoseira will be transferred from the laboratory to the sea and secured to the coastal reef. As the seedlings grow into adult algae, they will reproduce and replenish the degraded marine forest. The project site will be continuously monitored for the next few years to assess the success of restoration measures.

Hopefully, these seedlings will thrive as much as the ones in Cilento and Sardinia, bringing yet another success to the REEForest project.

Stay tuned for more updates in the next newsletter!
